411 | Cop on Cop violence

|
A tragic story of mistaken identity, or just being black, unfolded in Harlem last Thursday evening. According to the NY Times, an off duty police officer was fatally shot by another just a few hours after completing a late shift. Twenty-three year old Omar Edwards was shot twice as he was approached by three white officers in an unmarked vehicle who had mistaken him as a potential threat. The NYPD are pending an investigation. According to reports, Edwards was in pursuit of a suspect who he had caught attempting to break into his vehicle. As he proceeded to chase the suspect, gun drawn, the other officers rode up from behind Edwards. Being in plain clothes I'm assuming they thought Edwards was a threat, yelled for him to drop his weapon, and as he turned around with gun in hand, 6 rounds were fired. Edwards was pronounced dead at the scene.
