8709 Special | History was scary as a kid

|
Everyone is scared of something when their little. Common fears include the dark, bumps in the night, monsters under the bed, and the dentist. My sister and I shared these experiences as well as a very prominent one: movies about race and history. Now that I am older, I understand these subjects are important documents of the past, forever influencing us to make better futures. But as a kid, i tried my best to stray away from certain TV shows and films to ensure I'd get to sleep that night. I listed my top 5.
  1. Image:In The Heat of the Night.jpg In the Heat of the Night (series) - Excellent show based upon the film of a black detective in the South. Perfect mix of pasts demons in a 20th century.
  2. Nightjohn: Words Are Freedom Nightjohn - Yes it was a Disney movie, but when Carl Lumby gets his fingers chopped off for spelling in the sand, it turns into a PSA for reading.
  3. The Ghosts of Mississippi - A remarkable depiciton of the long-awaited trial against the assassin of Medgar Evers. The opening scene was scarring, and James Woods was haunting as the unapologetic shooter.
  4. Roots - Still have yet to watch in entirety. Will do someday.
  5. A Time to Kill - I've conquered this fear recently. Samuel L. Jackson should have an Oscar by now.
Honorable Mentions : Selma Lord Selma, Mississippi Burning, Malcolm X

8709 Special | Troop vs. B5

|
Though the original by the Jackson's is probably the more popular, two boy groups have covered it since. Troop and Bad Boy's B5. While B5's version was nice for the 106 circuit, Troop's remake stands the test of time. I actually prefer theirs to the OG.

G101.3 | When I want you back

|

Don't pout. Stop hating. Deep inside. Behind closed doors. This was your jam. My favorite from the better BSBs, ever since their Disney Channel concert debut. That's right, i remember that.

Hands down my favorite JE track of all time. And this album, J.E. Heartbreak is a modern classic, with "Promise" and "Let's Get Married." Man, what happened to them?

'00 | Your nothing but....

Fast forward a lil bit. 2000 was the year of men scorned, and Profyle's "Liar" was in the fore front of exposing women who cheat. That's right, the tables were turned for a change. Nothin' But Drama is right.

'93 | Ooooooooooooooohhhh

|
OMG! The slow grind song of all-time. When you hear that drum kick you know what time it is on the dance floor. H-Town's biggest and most known hit "Knockin' the Boots." No imitations allowed Pretty Ricky smh. RIP Dino.

'91 | I liiiiiiiiiiikee, the waaaaaaaaaaayy

|
The number 1 single from 90s group Hi-Five. "I Like the Way (The Kissing Game)" was the debut of off the group's self-titled album. Its scary to see this video of them as kids, not knowing what tragic circumstances were occurring behind the scenes. RIP Tony Thompson.

'92 | Your not my mommy!

|
If you haven't seen this, you need to immediately. Rebecca De Mornay did for nanny's what Glenn Close did for the other woman, and Jennifer Jason Leigh did for SWFs. The Hand That Rocks the Cradle is a horrific classic, perfect to watch on a weekend afternoon. When Mornay's Peyton decides to serve as nanny for a new middle class family, her distorted past and ulterior motives reveal a deadly obsession. Chick is crazy as hell!

'90 | Just smile for me

Heard this on the radio (satellite) the other day and had to immediately find it. Chorus is too classic. Don't remember any other bigger hits from The Rude Boys. RIP Gerald.

New New | "Battlefield"

Ladies and gentleman, I believe Jordin Sparks has arrived. New single is amazing, with an equally pleasant video. Its nice to see her grow into herself. Album due in July. 2:05 is the dope show.

New New | Why R U, Amerie

|
The missing '1' has arrived after a little hiatus. Amerie's video for the first single from In Love & War due in August. Sighted @ Shallow Nation. I wish her the best.

MESS | Did Jesus pay for this?????

I'm not sure if God's son hung on the cross to get lil' Rico out of jail. Spotted @ C&D.

'92 | Kick it to 'em Joe

A little New Jack Knowledge for your morning. Joe Public's hit "Live & Learn." Music with a message. I think I'll stick to a boy band theme today.
